Geita District is one of the 5 districts that make up Geita Region. It was granted district status in 1962. At that time it was called Geita Province. Geita District is located between 1,100 and 1,300 meters above sea level. It is also located at latitudes 208 and 3028 south of the equator and longitudes 32045 and 370 east of the Greenwich Mean Time. In 1975, Geita District was divided into Sengerema District. After the division of these two districts, Geita District was left with 7,825 square kilometers. In 2013, Geita district was re-divided to form Nyang’hwale district. Geita district has two councils, namely “Geita district council and city council”. Geita council has an area of 5,366.7 square kilometers (4,316 land and 1,050 water). Origin of the name Geita: The word Geita is derived from three words of the Wayango tribe (Warongo), which are Akabanga keita abhantu meaning the loss of the surroundings that were on the Akabanga keita abhantu mountain which was used by the Warongo as a place for traditional rituals. This name Geita was popular due to the inability of white people to pronounce the words Akabanga keita abhantu and thus ended up being Geita until today. The existing tribes of Wazinza, Wasukuma, Wasumbwa and Wasubi imitated the white people’s pronunciation of Geita and thus the word Akabanga keita abhantu began to slowly disappear until today.
