Sumbawanga District Council is a local government authority located in Rukwa Region, southwestern Tanzania. The council was established with the primary mandate of delivering social and economic services, enhancing governance, and promoting sustainable development for its people. Geographically, the district is characterized by fertile highlands, valleys, and woodlands, making it suitable for agriculture, livestock keeping, and natural resource use. Agriculture is the mainstay of the district’s economy, employing the majority of its population. Key food crops include maize, beans, cassava, rice, and sweet potatoes, while sunflower and groundnuts are widely grown as cash crops. With its favorable climate and soils, the district is considered a breadbasket for Rukwa Region and beyond. The council is committed to providing accessible and quality social services to its residents.
