Bagamoyo Sugar Limited (BSL) is a sugar production company in Tanzania, part of the Bakhresa Group, a conglomerate with diverse activities in various sectors. The company was established on 1 December 2016 and is headquartered in Bagamoyo District, Coast Region. The BSL project comprises a 10,000 hectare sugarcane plantation, with the aim of reducing dependence on imported sugar and achieving self-sufficiency in domestic demand, as well as producing surplus for export. The sugar factory is expected to produce approximately 30,000 tonnes of sugar in the first phase of production. In an effort to support out-growers, BSL provides technical support and ensures a reliable market for their sugarcane crops. This aims to increase the income of smallholder farmers and contribute to the development of communities surrounding the project. The company has invested in modern technologies, partnering with international companies such as Thyssenkrupp India Pvt Ltd for the supply of factory machinery, and Netafim from Israel for modern irrigation technology. These steps demonstrate BSL’s commitment to using the best technology for productive and sustainable production. In addition to sugar production, this project is expected to produce 90,000 megawatts of renewable energy from bagasse and 10,000 liters of ethanol from molasses, thus contributing to the availability of clean energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Bagamoyo Sugar Limited plays a key role in promoting the agricultural and industrial sectors in Tanzania, contributing to increasing sugar production, creating jobs, and supporting community development through partnerships with foreign farmers.
