Barrick Corporation, Vacancies – May 2025

Barrick North Mara Gold Mine Tanzania Limited is a significant gold mining operation located in the Tarime District of the Mara Region in northwestern Tanzania, approximately 100 kilometers east of Lake Victoria. The mine comprises two primary deposits: The Gokona underground mine and the Nyabirama open pit. Together, they contribute to a processing plant capable of handling about 8,000 tonnes of ore daily. Initially operated by Acacia Mining, the North Mara Gold Mine came under the majority ownership of Barrick Gold Corporation in 2019 following the acquisition of Acacia. This transition led to the formation of Twiga Minerals Corporation, a joint venture between Barrick and the Tanzanian government, with the latter holding a 16% stake. Barrick has emphasized community engagement and sustainable development in the region. Through the establishment of Community Development Committees (CDCs), the mine has invested over $7 million in local projects since 2019. These initiatives include supporting agribusiness programs that have provided employment and training to local youths and women, enhancing healthcare, and improving educational facilities. Despite these efforts, the mine has faced challenges related to environmental concerns and human rights allegations. In response, Barrick has implemented measures such as participatory water monitoring and established grievance mechanisms to address community concerns. As of 2024, the North Mara Gold Mine continues to play a pivotal role in Tanzania’s mining sector, balancing operational goals with community and environmental responsibilities.
