Mbeya Cement Company Limited (MCCL), established in 1973 by the Government of Tanzania, is a prominent cement manufacturer located in the Songwe Industrial Area along the Tunduma Highway in Mbeya. Initially state-owned, the company underwent privatization in 1999, transferring ownership to the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC), and was later acquired by Lafarge in 2001. In September 2023, Amsons Group, a Tanzanian conglomerate, acquired a 65% stake in MCCL, marking a new chapter in the company’s evolution. Operating under the “Tembo Cement” brand, MCCL produces high-quality cement products catering to both domestic and regional markets. The company’s strategic location enables efficient distribution to neighboring countries, including Malawi, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In fact, MCCL has exported over 1,377 shipments to 142 buyers, with Malawi accounting for approximately 80.5% of these exports. The Tanzanian government, through the Treasury Registrar, signed an agreement with MCCL’s shareholders in November 2023 to reform and revitalize the company. This agreement involved relieving the company of a 170 billion Tanzanian shilling debt and reinstating its mining licenses, aiming to enhance productivity and profitability. The new ownership structure includes Mauritius Pan Africa (51%), the Treasury Registrar (25%), the National Social Security Fund (10%), and Zambia’s Lafarge Cement (14%). Looking ahead, Amsons Group has committed to investing $320 million to expand MCCL’s production capacity, aligning with its vision to become one of the largest cement manufacturers in East Africa by 2030. This investment underscores MCCL’s pivotal role in supporting Tanzania’s infrastructure development and economic growth.
