Mtibwa Sugar Limited, Vacancies – July 2025

Mtibwa Sugar Estates Limited (MSE), based in Turiani Division of Mvomero District, Morogoro Region, stands as one of Tanzania’s premier sugar producers. Established in the early 1970s and later privatized in the late 1990s, Mtibwa contributes significantly to the national sugar output—around 130,000 metric tonnes annually. About 55% is grown on its estate farms, while the remaining 45% comes from smallholder outgrowers in nearby villages. These growers receive extension services, training, and agronomic support to enhance cane production. Beyond sugar, Mtibwa operates a cogeneration plant using bagasse—the fibrous byproduct of cane crushing—to generate electricity. The facility, built in phases, now boasts a capacity of about 13 MW, showcasing MSE’s commitment to sustainable energy use and value addition. Mtibwa is one of four major sugar producers in Tanzania, alongside Kilombero, Tanganyika Plantation Company, and Kagera Sugar. Together they produce roughly half of the country’s annual sugar demand of over 590,000 tonnes—leaving a significant shortfall met through imports. While outgrower programs are vital for production scale-up, challenges such as poor infrastructure, access to finance, and inconsistent market reliability persist, as noted in soil and market stability studies—raising calls for local mini-milling investments to support smallholders. As Mtibwa continues to enhance its production footprint and invest in energy and community partnerships, addressing safety, supply-chain resilience, and smallholder integration will be vital. With strategic reforms and renewed support for outgrower schemes, Mtibwa Sugar Estates aims to play a stronger role in reducing Tanzania’s sugar deficit and driving rural economic empowerment.
