Ngara District is one of the eight (08) districts of Kagera Region, Tanzania. The inhabitants of Ngara are the Wahangaza and Washubi people and speak Kihangaza and Kishubi. Before being named Ngara, it was known as Kibimba, meaning Wilderness. The actual origin of the name Ngara is a place that was used for meetings, which were held under large trees called iminyinya yingara. Thus, the Umunyinya Tree was planted by the Ngara District Council as a memorial, as it bears the name of the Ngara District. Ngara District has an area of ​​3,744 Km2, divided into four (4) divisions namely Nyamiaga, Kanazi, Rulenge and Murusagamba, 22 wards, 75 villages and 389 hamlets. Ngara District has two rainy seasons, namely the autumn and the spring rains. The autumn rains start from September to December and the spring rains start from February to May. The annual rainfall averages 1400 mm in the upper zone and 800 mm in the lower zone. The average temperature in the southern zone is 17 °C and in the northern zone the temperature rises to 25 °C. The economy of Ngara district is based on agricultural and livestock activities. The main crops grown are coffee, bananas, cassava, maize, beans and sorghum in terms of food crops. The main cash crops are coffee, bananas and avocados. About 95 percent of the population of this district depends on agriculture as a source of income and agricultural activities contribute more than 94 percent of the district’s income.
