TAZAMA Pipeline Limited is a joint venture between the governments of Tanzania and Zambia, created in 1968 with the aim of facilitating the transportation of oil from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to Ndola, Zambia. The name “TAZAMA” is derived from the abbreviation of Tanzania Zambia Mafuta, showing the strategic cooperation between these two countries in the energy sector. This company manages an oil pipeline with a length of approximately 1,710 kilometers, which goes from the Port of Dar es Salaam to the city of Ndola, which is the industrial and economic center of Zambia. The pipeline is designed to transport crude oil that is processed at the Ndola oil refinery (Indeni Refinery). TAZAMA Pipeline Limited makes a significant contribution to the economy of Tanzania and Zambia by reducing the cost of oil transportation, compared to traditional methods such as trucks or railways. Also, the company contributes to the government’s income through taxes and service fees, as well as providing employment to the residents of the areas where it passes. This company is responsible for ensuring the safety and efficiency of its infrastructure, observing international environmental management standards. Since the pipeline passes through areas with people and a sensitive environment, TAZAMA Pipeline Limited works closely with the communities in those areas, to ensure that its activities do not harm the environment or the community. Through its efforts to maintain the sustainable transportation of oil, TAZAMA Pipeline Limited has become an important pillar in the economic cooperation between Tanzania and Zambia, stimulating the development of the energy sector and trade in the Southern African region.
