The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is the oldest and largest public university in Tanzania. Established in 1961 as a branch of the University of London, and later becoming an independent institution in 1970, UDSM has continued to be a major centre for higher education, research, and innovation in the country and in Africa. The university is located in the western part of Dar es Salaam, in the Mlimani area, covering a total of 1,625 acres on Observation Hill, approximately 13 kilometres from the city centre. Its tranquil landscape and excellent infrastructure make it a conducive environment for academics and in-depth research. UDSM offers a variety of programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels, through its various colleges and institutes, such as the College of Social Sciences and Arts, the School of Business, the School of Law, and the College of Natural Sciences and Medicine. In addition to academics, UDSM prides itself on being a hub for innovation and technological advancement, with institutions like the UDSM Center for Information and Communication Technology (CoICT) that have contributed significantly to the development of the technology sector in Tanzania.
