Water Institute (WI), Vacancies – August 2025

The Water Institute (WI), formerly known as the Water Development and Management Institute (WDMI) and before that the Rwegarulila Water Resources Institute (RWRI), is a government institution operating as an independent agency under the Ministry of Water and Irrigation. It was formally established in 1974 as part of a 20-year rural water supply plan aimed at making the country’s water infrastructure and water professionals a priority. WI aims to develop technical professionals in the water sector through training, technical consultancy, and research. Its vision is to be a centre of excellence in technical education, research, and water resources consultancy services in Tanzania and the African continent. The institute’s vision is to improve water resources management through quality training, research, and consultancy applicable to the entire water sector. The main responsibilities include providing technical training, conducting research and consultancy, as well as effective management of the institution’s resources. WI’s headquarters are in Ubungo, Dar es Salaam, with state-of-the-art technical training and facilities. It also has a Ngurdoto Research School in Arusha. Through training and mentoring, it builds community self-reliance and improves water supply and sanitation systems. Over time, the Water Institute has been instrumental in building a skilled human resource to address water challenges in Tanzania, partnering with emerging technologies and all sectoral entities.
