The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) is the official capital market in Tanzania established to facilitate the trading of shares, bonds, and other financial products. The DSE was officially established in 1996 and began operations in 1998, as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the financial sector and promote domestic and foreign investment. The DSE operates under the supervision of the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA), which ensures that all activities in the market are conducted in a transparent, efficient, and in compliance with established rules and regulations. The market provides an opportunity for various companies in the country to list (issue shares to the public) to obtain capital to develop their activities, and for individual or institutional investors to purchase those shares as a means of short-term or long-term investment. Among the companies listed on the DSE are telecommunications companies, banks, insurance companies, industrial companies, as well as government agencies such as Tanesco and TTCL. The market also offers Treasury Bonds and Corporate Bonds, which are alternative investments with guaranteed interest income. Through the DSE, many Tanzanians have gained education on investment and the importance of participating in economic growth through the purchase of shares. The DSE also plays a significant role in increasing financial transparency for listed companies, as well as promoting good corporate governance of these companies. Overall, the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange is a key link in the development of the Tanzanian economy by facilitating the distribution of capital and stimulating domestic and foreign investment.
