The Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) is the official military arm of the United Republic of Tanzania. The TPDF was established on 1 September 1964, replacing the King’s African Rifles after it was disbanded following the independence of Tanganyika. The force was established with the aim of protecting the country’s borders, ensuring the security of citizens, and maintaining peace within and outside Tanzania. The TPDF is led by patriotism, discipline, and equality, being a people’s army built to reflect national values. The force comprises three main services: the Army, the Air Force, and the Navy. These services work together to ensure that the TPDF is capable of meeting national and international security challenges. The TPDF’s primary responsibilities include: Protecting national borders: The force is responsible for ensuring the security of Tanzania’s land, water, and airspace. Participating in peacekeeping operations: The TPDF has been participating in various United Nations and African Union operations, building a reputation for maintaining peace in conflict areas. Providing assistance to citizens during emergencies: The military assists in natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and other disasters. Providing training to youth through the National Building Force (JKT): Through JKT, the JWTZ contributes to building job skills, patriotism, and good morals among youth. The JWTZ also promotes development through various projects, including agriculture, animal husbandry, and social projects.
