The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) is a government agency established through Act of Parliament No. 11 of 1995, and it officially began its operations on 1st July 1996. TRA’s primary role is to administer and collect various taxes on behalf of the Central Government, operating within the legal framework to ensure impartiality and adherence to statutory regulations. The core functions of TRA include assessing, collecting, and accounting for all revenue derived from taxes and non-tax sources as mandated by law. The agency plays a vital role in mobilizing domestic resources to support Tanzania’s socio-economic development and reduce reliance on foreign aid. Key taxes under TRA’s administration include Income Tax, Value-Added Tax (VAT), Customs and Excise Duties, and other levies as stipulated in the country’s tax laws. To enhance efficiency and compliance, TRA has adopted modern technologies, such as electronic filing systems (e-filing), mobile payment solutions, and automated customs management systems. These innovations aim to simplify tax processes, improve transparency, and curb tax evasion. Additionally, TRA engages in taxpayer education programs to promote voluntary compliance and foster a culture of tax responsibility among citizens and businesses. Over the years, TRA has contributed significantly to national development by increasing tax revenue collection and supporting the government’s initiatives in areas like infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Despite facing challenges such as tax evasion and limited public awareness, TRA continues to implement reforms to enhance its effectiveness and align with global best practices in tax administration. Through its efforts, TRA remains a cornerstone of Tanzania’s economic stability and growth.
